Germany under the empire 1910 In Berlin lives family Braun: Ernst, his wife Elsbeth, Hans, Klaus and Annemarie. The girl is called "Nesthäkchen" because she's the youngest family member. Other persons in the household are cooky Hanne, parlour maid Frieda and the nanny Lena. Lena is an attachment figure for little Annemarie. Grandmother (Elsbeth's mother) visits the family very often. In this episode Annemarie gives away her doll Marianne to a poor girl and comps her shoes to a netherland girl.

Nanny Lena, Annemarie and Klaus travel to bavaria to have a farm vacation with Aunt Käthe and Uncle Heinrich. Back in Berlin "Nesthäkchen" runs away from home with other kids. The girl falls into a coal pit; rescued by Lena. Lena gives the advice Annemarie to send in a kindergarten. The Braun parents contact a lady who is owner of a pre-school .

Four years later; Annemarie is ten now. In school the doughter of Doctor Braun is a genie. Her parents, nanny Lena, her brothers and the grandma are proud of Annemarie. During Annemarie's birthday party she gets powerless and is taking into a hospital.
