Die Piloten beschließen, in der Warteschleife zu bleiben, um das Problem zu lösen. Nach einer Stunde stürzt Flug 173 aber wegen Treibstoffmangels ab. Weil eine Feder im rechten Fahrgestell versagt hatte, war dieses Fahrwerk außergewöhnlich schnell ausgefahren und hatte so den Sensor beschädigt, der das ausgefahrene Gestell meldet und die Anzeige aktiviert.
